When you have young children, the well-meaning, unsolicited advice flows. "Enjoy the moment, be present!" “It goes by so fast, cherish everything,” but also “don’t worry so much!” It feels like trying to grab a river with your bare hands.
This short episode originated from a podcast project caleld AudioFlux. They post open calls for audio submissions with specific prompts: (1) focus on “firsts” (2) convey the idea of time passing without a ticking clock (3) keep the length to exactly three minutes. (You read that right, this will occupy your mind for one luxuriant teeth-brushing session.)
At the time of recording this, our daughter Lulu had just turned one. Lulu’s mother Monty and I like to say “time is a feeling.” This collection of fugues is meant to convey that - how love and fear dilate and contract time.

Halloween Movie Picks
It’s not often I send a fuguesletter on Halloween so I had to include something thematic before Mariah starts blaring in the grocery stores. So here are my top 5 scary movies if you’re looking for inspiration.
#5 - Let the Right One In. Best vampire movie I’ve ever seen. It’s scary but beautiful to look at - like a creepy moving painting (and way better than the subsequent American version).
#4 - 28 Days Later. Terrifying and moving. 2nd best zombie flick ever. Plus this movie introduced the idea of sprinter zombies (as opposed to the droolers that loaf around and groan) - perfect soundtrack too.
#3 - Shaun of the Dead. 1st best zombie movie, but also hilarious and a great cast. Paved the way for Get Out’s mix or horror and comedy. (Get Out should be on here, but it feels too obvious.) It also has a great soundtrack.
#2 - Babadook. Legit scary and creepy but also a really powerful allegory for coping with grief.
#1 - The Fly. A brilliant scientist mistakenly transforms himself into a fly. He barfs on his food to eat it - body horror before it became a trendy movie category. Peak Goldblum, Peak Davis, Peak Cronenberg, Peak Gross.
